{"id":19245,"date":"2018-09-27T11:39:42","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T15:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=19245"},"modified":"2018-09-28T12:21:07","modified_gmt":"2018-09-28T16:21:07","slug":"a-is-for-advocacy-alsc18-act4kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2018\/09\/a-is-for-advocacy-alsc18-act4kids\/","title":{"rendered":"A is for Advocacy #alsc18 #act4kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First, this session was recorded and will be on the ALSC web site at some point. \u00a0I highly recommend taking an hour to watch it with your staff.<\/p>\n<p>Some takeaways that I wrote down from this session include:<\/p>\n<p>-Who is not being represented in the books that you share?<\/p>\n<p>-When doing outreach to diverse populations, focus on what\u2019s working, rather than what\u2019s broken. \u00a0Look for sustainable solutions.<\/p>\n<p>-Check your pronoun usage in programs, policies, interactions, and when sharing books.<\/p>\n<p>-Whose childhood matters? \u00a0African American children are thought of as more adult than white children at a younger age. \u00a0This means that people may let a 10 year old white child go for doing something childlike, but not an African American child for the same action.<\/p>\n<p>-Know your community. \u00a0Know your library. \u00a0Who are the community leaders? \u00a0Do they visit your library? \u00a0Why not?<\/p>\n<p>-You are a change agent. \u00a0Connect with other like-minded people and stay current in your librarianship. \u00a0Find blogs, round tables, and social media.<\/p>\n<p>-Empower your users. \u00a0Don\u2019t put a lot of effort into fine free items when what your community really wants is signs in their own language.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Lisa is the Head of Youth\/YA Services at the Clinton-Macomb Public Library in Clinton Township, MI.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This post addresses the following ALSC Core Competencies: V.
