Dear ALSC Members,<\/p>\n
In light of concerns raised by individuals at our membership meeting last summer, new information and points of view revealed through the discussions on ALAConnect, a board divided over the decision, and in consultation with ALA Parliamentarian Eli Mina, I am bringing forward a motion to rescind the ALSC Scope of Attention Motion at the upper level. This action is not meant to undermine the Board but to determine if the majority still feels that moving forward with this motion is in the best interest of ALSC.<\/p>\n
At the basic parliamentary level, Mr. Mina assured ALSC Executive Director Aimee Strittmater and me that the Board did nothing improper. But after reviewing our history and seeing the comments on ALAConnect, he felt that consideration of rescinding the motion was valid. The feedback we received from members indicates that the decision to bring forward this motion was reached without sufficient member input or relevant information. Given this lack of information, and how divisive the motion remains, I have placed the motion to rescind on the agenda.<\/p>\n
This motion is the first item for the Saturday afternoon board meeting at Midwinter. Since our members care deeply about this issue, I would also like to include you in the discussion. As a result, I would like to begin the discussion with 15 minutes for member input, limited to no more than two minutes per person. In order to be informed about this issue, I also ask that you review the Scope of Attention Motion discussions on ALAConnect.<\/p>\n
