Lake List Poem:<\/strong>
\nTalk about what it would be like to go to the lake.
\nWhat will you see at the lake?
\nWhat will you do at the lake?
\nWhat animals will you see in the water?
\nHow do you swim in the lake?
\nWhat do you eat at the lake? Ice Cream!
\nOn BIG pieces of yellow, green or blue butcher paper, write down each answer one word after the other going down the page to create\u00a0a list poem.\u00a0 Read the poem together.<\/p>\nRead the poem, \u201cSwimming in the Lake\u201d by Irene Latham aloud.<\/p>\n
Swimming in the Lake<\/strong>
\nIt starts with a whisper
\non my ankle,
\na tickle on my thigh \u2013
\nI kick and shiver:
\nare there alligators nearby?
\nSomething bubbles,
\nsomething pops.
\nI see a head \u2013
\nmy heart squeezes!<\/p>\n\u2013 and a pair of eyes.
\nmy body freezes!
\nHelp!
\nGet me out of here, quick!
\nWhat? It’s just a stick?
\nNot a snaketurtlepirhanasharkALLIGATOR
\nhunting me now
\nfor a feast later?
\nI wish I knew what to believe \u2026
\nIt ends with me
\nclimbing the ladder,
\ncrying, No more!<\/p>\nI think I like the lake better

Form a HUGE circle – jump in the lake!\u00a0Arms out – start swimming! “…on my ankle” – fingers\u00a0TICKLE,\u00a0KICK, SHIVER,\u00a0alligator \u2013 hands out and CHOMP!\u00a0Bubbles \u2013 make bubble noises,\u00a0POP! \u2013 make a loud or quiet popping noise,\u00a0point to your eyes, “my body freezes! “FREEZE!,\u00a0Get me out of here \u2013 swim faster! “What?” \u2013 STOP, tread water, “snaketurltepirhanasharkALLIGATOR” – act out one of the animals,\u00a0pretend to climb a ladder,\u00a0JUMP out of the lake and onto the shore!\u00a0Read the poem one more time \u2013 faster!<\/p>\n
Craft time! Items: Construction paper, scissors, pencils and glue sticks. \u00a0Have each child draw and cut out two favorite lake objects. \u00a0A frog? S’mores? Glue them on a copy of the poem to take home and read aloud with their family.<\/p>\n
