{"id":18433,"date":"2018-06-18T00:01:44","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T04:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=18433"},"modified":"2018-06-17T15:03:20","modified_gmt":"2018-06-17T19:03:20","slug":"serving-on-the-alsc-advocacy-legislation-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2018\/06\/serving-on-the-alsc-advocacy-legislation-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Serving on the ALSC Advocacy &#038; Legislation Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After three years, my time on the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/aboutalsc\/coms\/pg1childadv\/als-lg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALSC Advocacy &amp; Legislation Committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has come to an end. When I was first asked to serve on this committee, my initial reaction was to decline (hard pass). What did I know about advocacy (besides being a loud mouth) or legislation (besides that it is usually complicated), in relation to libraries? After talking it out with friends, I regained my composure to accept the initial appointment, and a later appointment as co-chair. Because, ultimately, I saw not only an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact in the profession, but a learning opportunity for myself. As my final act on this committee I wanted to share with you some of the work this committee has done, and encourage you to be involved in a process committee in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>During the last three years, this committee has:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changed to a fully virtual committee (no requirement to attend national conferences!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surveyed the membership, and youth services professionals outside the membership to gauge their knowledge of advocacy and legislation resources and learn what types of resources would be most useful to their advocacy work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sent Co-Chairs (myself and Africa Hands) to NLLD 2017 to learn, participate, and report back.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facilitated a discussion about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2017\/07\/advocacy-discussion-alsc-membership-meeting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advocacy Tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the ALSC Membership Meeting, ALA Annual 2017<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborated with the Public Awareness Committee to develop a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2018\/04\/something-new-for-nlld\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presentation for ALSC Institute 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborated with the Managing Children\u2019s Services Committee to develop an advocacy webinar for Fall 2018.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helped to create and update NLLD talking points, tweets, and Facebook posts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Written <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/author\/alsc-advocacy-and-legislation-committee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monthly blog posts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to update and educate the profession.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Totally evolved my understanding and knowledge of advocacy and legislative issues in libraryland!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you, like me, are dedicated to developing your own self, as well as the profession, consider volunteering for a process committee. Even better, ask to join a committee covering a topic you know little about. Then, <\/span><b>be ready and willing to put in the time to learn and contribute.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Committee members who actively participate in discussions and projects are far more valuable than subject matter experts who are hard to reach or too busy to contribute to group projects. Serving on a committee is work. It takes time. However, the more committees are filled with hard working members, the more we can accomplish for the profession.
