{"id":18156,"date":"2018-05-01T00:02:51","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T04:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=18156"},"modified":"2018-04-30T14:06:19","modified_gmt":"2018-04-30T18:06:19","slug":"calling-everyday-advocates-to-national-library-legislative-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2018\/05\/calling-everyday-advocates-to-national-library-legislative-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Calling Everyday Advocates to National Library Legislative Day!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019ve just returned from the Arbuthnot Honor Lecture, delivered by Naomi Shihab Nye in Bellingham WA. \u00a0You will hear more on this event soon, but you can check it out now on Twitter at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23Arbuthnot2018&amp;src=tyah\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">#Arbuthnot2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (and contemplate your application to be the host site for the 2019 lecture with Debbie Reese? \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/2019-arbuthnot-honor-lecture\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Applications close May 15th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During her talk, which will be published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Children and Libraries<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Nye said that she encourages everyone to read obituaries, and shared a little about how many amazing people she has discovered through them. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to look far for heroes; but we do have to remember how many there are.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This made me think of the amazing work each of you do every day, in your libraries. \u00a0While in Bellingham, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/turtle.wexler.58\/posts\/1792180174172918\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I visited the Bellingham Public Library<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and was impressed at examples of what I know so many of you accomplish: maintaining library environments that engage children and families in creative learning activities and exploration. \u00a0Like many of you, the Bellingham Public Library staff do it on a shoestring, from their modest children\u2019s room that faces City Hall.
