It\u2019s been a whirlwind, indeed. Although I\u2019ve attended several Midwinter meetings over the years, this one has been especially fruitful. The sheer pace of meetings and activities has had me dashing all weekend.<\/p>\nIt\u2019s been a whirlwind, indeed. That\u2019s my excuse for not posting sooner. I arrived from Chicagoland early Thursday afternoon; I managed to avoid the blizzard back home.While my coworkers had a snow day, we were enjoying 60 degree weather here in Denver.<\/p>\n
On Friday I attended the Bill Morris Seminar, the highlight of my conference experience so far. As part of the 2018 cohort, I came away with an expanded skill set for children\u2019s literature and media evaluation. And I met some truly amazing people in the process.<\/p>\n
Immediately after that, I attended the inspiring opening session where activists Patrisse Cullars and Marley Dias discussed what inspired them to rise up and take action.<\/p>\n
Later that evening I joined up with the ALSC Membership Committee, who sponsored a truly fun Dutch dinner at a local gastropub.<\/p>\n
Saturday morning came much too quickly. Those 7:00 a.m. vendor breakfasts are wonderful but very early. Fortified with yummy eats, coffee, and bags full of swag, I headed to the ALSC Leadership meeting. In case you don\u2019t know, Leadership is open to everyone. The presentation on the toxic stress and its effect on children was outstanding.<\/p>\n
Sunday morning meant it was time for the ALSC All Committee meeting. This is another meeting I encourage everyone to attend.\u00a0 You don\u2019t need to be on a committee to attend. It\u2019s a great way to discover ways to become an active member of ALSC.\u00a0\u00a0 My current committee School Age Programs & Services got tons accomplished on our current project.<\/p>\n
In between all these meetings, I managed to hit the exhibits and collect an impressive amount of swag. I also had the chance to meet with vendors, and get some great advice and recommendations for books and materials. The Pop Top Stage and Book Buzz Theater delivered great information as always.<\/p>\n
As I type this post (at 4:30 in the morning!) I\u2019m anticipating THE \u201cbig event\u201d aka the Youth Media Awards which begins at 8:00 this morning.<\/p>\n
This has been an incredibly long post \u2013 I could have (and probably should have) made each event into a separate post.<\/p>\n
