Late this past summer, we began a feature in which we profile ALSC Board members<\/a>. We hope to offer information about the people who work to guide the organization so that you<\/strong> can feel more comfortable in reaching out to them with your concerns, questions, or comments.<\/span> To continue this series, we invite you to meet ALSC Board member, Mary Voors. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the early 1990’s, I was working in a public library. I had worked in Circulation, in Public Relations, in Young Adults, at a few of our branches, and at the Switchboard, before finding myself in Children’s Services. I loved the teamwork, creativity and cooperation among the staff I found there. I loved the devotion to the kids and the underlying desire to offer the best possible service, resources, and programs to our library’s youngest customers. Thanks to the mentoring and encouragement of my first manager in the children\u2019s area, Cindy Woodruff,\u00a0 I was hooked.\u00a0 It was home.<\/p>\n

I joined ALA in 1993 as a way to learn more about librarianship. Since then, while \u00a0I have always been a member of ALSC, I have belonged to a variety of other ALA roundtables and currently belong to both the Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT<\/a>) and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT<\/a>).<\/p>\n

I have been privileged to serve on a variety of committees supporting the work of ALSC including the Intellectual Freedom committee, the ALSC\/BWI Summer Reading Program Grant and Reading Program, the Newbery Award Selection committee, the International Relations committee, Quicklists Consulting committee, and ALSC Great Web Sites. As a member of the ALSC Board of Directors, I currently serve as a representative to the Board for the Advocacy and Legislation committee.<\/p>\n

Members of the Board are volunteers and take their work very seriously. I am energized by and committed to ALSC’s core values, purpose, and diversity work, and am very proud to have been a member of the Board which reached the difficult decision to cancel the 2016 ALSC National Institute<\/a> that had been scheduled to be held in North Carolina. This decision was made due to the repealing of all GLBT-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinances throughout North Carolina. It \u00a0was not an easy thing to do, but standing up for our organization\u2019s core values was (and is) important.<\/p>\n

Strengths I bring to ALSC and to the board include the ability to be open with the membership and an eagerness to share information about the many resources, awards, scholarships, white papers, scholarships, booklists. events, and educational opportunities available through the organization. I also love to share how members can get involved. Earlier this month, Vice-President\/President-Elect, Jamie Campbell Naidoo, offered a webinar titled \u201cGet Involved with ALSC: Navigating Opportunities within the Organization<\/a>\u201d which is now archived for ALSC Members to learn some of the many different ways to get involved with our organization. \u00a0And we welcome and encourage YOU to get involved!<\/p>\n

ALSC members should feel free to reach out to me – or any other member of the Board – if they have questions or concerns about the organization \u00a0and\/or want ideas about how to get involved.<\/p>\n
