{"id":16451,"date":"2017-09-01T12:01:07","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T16:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=16451"},"modified":"2017-08-31T22:12:47","modified_gmt":"2017-09-01T02:12:47","slug":"16451","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2017\/09\/16451\/","title":{"rendered":"September Means Banned Books Week!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy September! \u00a0 Are you revived and rested from Summer Reading? \u00a0As much as September makes me sad, because it means the end of beach trips, it also makes me really happy. \u00a0For me, September means back-to-school cannoli and Banned Books Week (BBW). \u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is my first year conducting BBW programming for all ages, 0-18! While I&#8217;m a little intimidated by the prospect, I&#8217;m also excited. \u00a0I have projects and programs planned that are both active and passive, which I hope will appeal to all ages. \u00a0For Tweens and Teens, I am hosting an &#8220;I Read Banned Books&#8221; tote bags, where they will use articles about challenged books, cover images, and other materials to decorate their own bag to take home. \u00a0For the Kids (elementary aged) we&#8217;ll host a Banned Books Bingo and have coloring sheets inspired by challenged and banned titles. \u00a0I&#8217;ll even be reading some of those titles to my classes that visit, and my story time groups!<\/p>\n<p>For me, the programming and the planning are the easiest part of BBW. \u00a0The hardest? \u00a0Picking my favorite banned books. \u00a0 My parents were never ones to censor what we read, and even now, I&#8217;m fairly certain some people maybe surprised at what I read when I was young. My personal library is filled with challenged works, and a <em>Where the Wild Things Are\u00a0<\/em> print hangs above my couch.\u00a0So, in preparation, I thought I would share some of my favorite banned books with you all. \u00a0Please don&#8217;t ask me to explain why, for some it&#8217;s too hard!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Captain Underpants\u00a0<\/em>Series\u00a0by Dav Pilkey<\/li>\n<li><em>Where&#8217;s Waldo ?<\/em> Series by Martin Handford<\/li>\n<li><em>Where the Wild Things Are<\/em> by Maurice Sendak<\/li>\n<li><em>Forever<\/em> by Judy Blume<\/li>\n<li><em>Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>Series by JK Rowling<\/li>\n<li><em>Where the Sidewalk Ends<\/em> by Shel Silverstein<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are you doing for Banned Books Week? \u00a0What are some of your favorite banned books?
