{"id":16337,"date":"2017-08-11T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-11T04:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=16337"},"modified":"2025-05-21T10:01:24","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T14:01:24","slug":"stem-teaching-kids-nuclear-concepts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2017\/08\/stem-teaching-kids-nuclear-concepts\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM: Teaching Kids About Nuclear Concepts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four days ago was the 72nd anniversary of a U.S. atomic bomb destroying five square miles of the city of Hiroshima. &nbsp;Yesterday was the 72nd anniversary of the U.S&#8217; atomic bombing of Nagasaki. &nbsp;In five days time from the writing of this post, WWII ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nea\">NEA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.org\/tools\/lessons\/63449.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NEA has an excellent set of lesson plans, text resources, images and video to help children&nbsp;understand the events that concluded WWII<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turning the tragic loss of 210000 men, women and children into a positive experience for our youngest patrons is not beyond any of us. &nbsp;And in many ways, I personally feel that the majority of those who perished that fateful week would want our next generation to understand the&nbsp;positive and constructive uses for nuclear energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-voyager\">Voyager<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are on the cusp of a major eclipse, and there&#8217;s no better time while children are excited about astronomy to tell them all about the Voyager 2 spacecraft. &nbsp;It&#8217;s heart if a nuclear battery, decaying uranium, which has powered its mission beyond the edge of our solar system. &nbsp;Interestingly enough, the craft weighs as much as the average 11 year old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nuclear batteries have powered 22 American space missions and will power more in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out NASA&#8217;s amazing interactive diagram of the Voyager 2 spacecraft:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/voyager\/mission\/spacecraft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/voyager\/mission\/spacecraft\/<\/a><a name=\"LETTER.BLOCK7\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/teachers.egfi-k12.org\/radioactive-decay-lesson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lesson:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/teachers.egfi-k12.org\/radioactive-decay-lesson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Atomic Candy<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>In this activity developed by the Science House at North Carolina State University, students in grades 5 &#8211; 11 will\u00a0use M&amp;Ms to learn about radioactivity, the rate at which an isotope decays, and the concept of half-life.
