{"id":16169,"date":"2017-07-21T00:01:10","date_gmt":"2017-07-21T04:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=16169"},"modified":"2025-05-21T10:14:40","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T14:14:40","slug":"summer-reading-wind-time-amp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2017\/07\/summer-reading-wind-time-amp\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Reading Wind Down &#8211; time to amp it up!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inaction-is-not-an-option\">Inaction is not an option!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2017 Summer Reading might be winding down, but it&#8217;s time to amp it up for next year! &nbsp;Next year&#8217;s theme is &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cslpreads.org\/programs\/future-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Libraries Rock<\/a>!&#8217;. &nbsp;STEM and STEAM programming have tons of crossover applications to music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a few ideas to get you stoked for next year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ukulele\">Ukulele<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Got ukes? &nbsp;How about a ukulele club? &nbsp;Learning to play a few chords on ukulele is super easy &#8211; anyone can learn. &nbsp;Nail C-F-G chords and you&#8217;d be floored how many songs you can play with ease. &nbsp;We&#8217;ve been teaching all summer long and the kids are lovin&#8217; it. &nbsp;Next summer would be a great opportunity for you to start up your own club. &nbsp;We searched around and found starter kits, complete with ukulele, bag, picks, tuner and extra strings for only $34 on sale on Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-teens\">Teens!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teens will truly go for this. &nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=net.soundapps.modulab_free&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oscilab Groovebox<\/a> is a free app for Android and iPad at the Google Play Store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oscilab for iPad and Android\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R1L9AmJQG6Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-percussion\">Percussion!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can&#8217;t beat a great set of percussion instruments for all kinds of programming. &nbsp;Amazon has a ton of great sets and this one especially is a great value:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-mean-like-vh1\">You mean, like, VH1?!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes! &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vh1savethemusic.org\/steam-toolkit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VH1<\/a> has some fantastic STEM\/STEAM music resources!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-streets-are-steaming\">Streets are STEAMing!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sesame Street dedicated all of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sesameworkshop.org\/season43\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Season 43<\/a> STEAM and you know they&#8217;re going to have some amazing tunes! &nbsp;Go grab some ideas!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only that, but you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/SesameStreet\/search?query=elmo+the+musical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">check out clips from Elmo the Musical<\/a>, which incidentally is a STEAM focused production!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-science\">SCIENCE!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when patrons start commenting, &#8220;What&#8217;s all that noise?!&#8221; you tell &#8217;em, hey dude, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/vh1stm.s3.amazonaws.com\/SxSW_Presentation030916.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Music Powers&nbsp;STEAM Education&nbsp;and the Brain<\/a>&#8220;. &nbsp;Download the presentation and, um, well, blow their minds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just remember: music education allows for a more efficient use of attention-related resources in the pre-frontal cortex. &nbsp;Or, um, better attentional focus, and stronger impulse control&#8230;or even better, this is your brain on music!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inaction is not an option! 2017 Summer Reading might be winding down, but it&#8217;s time to amp it up for next year! &nbsp;Next year&#8217;s theme is &#8216;Libraries Rock!&#8217;. &nbsp;STEM and STEAM programming have tons of crossover applications to music.
