Each month, we work to profile an ALSC member, and learn a little about their professional life as well as a bit about their not-so-serious side.<\/span> Using just a few questions, we try to keep the profiles fun while highlighting the variety of members in our organization. So, without further ado, welcome to our ALSC profile<\/a>, ten questions with ALSC staffmember, Laura Schulte-Cooper<\/strong>.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Photo1. What do you do, and how long have you been doing it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am ALSC\u2019s program officer for communications, hired by acting ALSC director Stephanie Anton in August 2000. I manage Children and Libraries<\/em>, ALSC\u2019s journal; write and produce ALSC Matters<\/em>; assist the incomparable Jenna Nemec-Loise with the Everyday Advocacy website<\/a> and newsletter; manage the main ALSC website<\/a> and several microsites, and administer the electronic discussion lists. Although I\u2019ve been in the same position for many years, the work never seems to get old. Evolving technologies, shifting priorities, and special projects have kept me on my toes. 😊<\/p>\n

2. What did you most enjoy at the recent ALA Annual Conference?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I really enjoyed the Leadership and ALSC meeting! Dr. Nicole A. Cooke, School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, delivered a very interesting and inspiring talk, Strengthening the Virtuous Circle: Why Diversity in the Profession<\/em> Matters<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The meeting also included informative spotlights on the Emerging Leaders project and the work of the Diversity in ALSC Task Force. It was so much more engaging to hear the presenters talk about their work and findings rather than reading a report on paper.<\/p>\n

3. Do you have any pets?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We currently have three cats: Moxie, Pickles, and Coconut. Would you like to see a photo!? 😊 We also seem to have a couple rabbits and a chipmunk who have made our yard their home.<\/p>\n

4. What’s your favorite book of all time?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s too difficult to pick just one, of course. Here are a few titles that appear on my favorites list: The Jungle<\/em> by Upton Sinclair; A Confederacy of Dunces<\/em> by John Kennedy Toole; Bud, Not Buddy<\/em> by Christopher Paul Curtis; and A Tale of Two Cities<\/em> by Charles Dickens.<\/p>\n

5. Vegetarian, Carnivore, or Omnivore?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vegetarian since 1981. Hmmm, maybe that happened after reading The Jungle<\/em> (see above!).<\/p>\n

One thing is for sure, it is A LOT easier to find vegetarian options on restaurant menus in 2017 than it was in 1981! Back then, there seemed to be a certain mentality regarding the importance of \u201cmeat<\/strong> and potatoes,\u201d especially in my hometown Chicago, \u201cHog Butcher for the World!\u201d 😉<\/p>\n

6. Do you prefer being the driver or the passenger?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Either situation is okay with me, depends on the day and the destination. Sometimes I like being \u201cat the controls,\u201d but other times it\u2019s nice to just sit back and enjoy the ride.<\/p>\n

7. What was your favorite thing to play with when you were a child? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Dolls! I admit it! Paper dolls, Barbie dolls, Crissy<\/a> with her groovy adjustable hair, pocket-sized Heidi & Spunky<\/a> whose arms flew up in a friendly \u201chello\u201d when you pushed a button on their stomach, and two particular baby dolls. The first baby was \u201cSweetums.\u201d Actually, my very first memory is of my big brother dangling dear little Sweetums out of the car window during a family trip to downstate Illinois. And then there was \u201cTiny.\u201d I still have Tiny. She is tucked away safely in a cedar chest, still wearing the beautiful little robe my grandma Schulte sewed for her. (A prized possession.)<\/p>\n

8. What would you do if you saw a zebra on your way to work?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I live only a few streets away from Brookfield Zoo. I\u2019ve been waiting for a jail break for years! Would I try to coax the zebra back over to the zoo? I\u2019m not sure about that.<\/p>\n

9. Are you most comfortable in your kitchen or in your living room?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am a confirmed home-body, blissfully comfortable in every dang room of my home!<\/p>\n

10. Do you have any piercings or tattoos?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty boring, I guess. I had my ears pierced when I was a teenager but the holes closed years ago. In my early twenties, I kind of wanted a tattoo of the flaming pumpkin head on the cover of Sonic Youth\u2019s Bad Moon Rising<\/em> album, but that never happened. Probably better not to get a tattoo if you only \u201ckind of\u201d want one. (Maybe someday\u2026)<\/p>\n
