And if you are a walking, talking, breathing, adult, anywhere in the world, you are certainly aware of the current intense interest in the power and persuasiveness of social media. The role of librarians when it comes to helping their patrons negotiate and assess the information that comes from those sources varies greatly depending upon your community, your library, your job. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That role, to provide media and digital literacy in a constantly changing world, demands more than ever that we share what we learn and our own expertise. Towards that end, ALSC\u2019s Intellectual Freedom Committee partnered with AASL to host a joint <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/communityforum-mar2017\">Community Forum on Digital Literacy\/Digital Citizenship.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you missed the forum you can access the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/sites\/ala.org.alsc\/files\/content\/Community%20Forum_March%202017_Chat%20Transcript.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">transcript here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or focus your attention on the media literacy section of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1zv7DiiyOHRrwTjEbrWbkE0UvJcZ0qDGCu9lhE1AHdhE\/edit?ts=585d9124\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ALSC Post-Election Resource<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are just a few of the great resources listed there:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/story\/breaking-news-consumer-handbook-fake-news-edition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Breaking News Consumer\u2019s Handbook: Fake News Edition<br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A handy checklist (\u201ccut out and tape near your computer or TV\u201d) provided by WNYC&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the Media.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/skokielibrary.info\/media\/uploads\/161122%20Civic%20Lab%20Five%20News%20Browser%20Extensions.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Five Browser Extensions for Reading Online News<br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This resource list from Skokie Public Library includes five downloadable browser extensions to help online news readers identify the accuracy and bias of their sources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/intfreedom\/statementspols\/ifresolutions\/accurateinformation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resolution on Access to Accurate Information<br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On January 24, 2017, ALA Council reaffirmed a 2005 resolution and further resolved to support the critical role of libraries and library workers in teaching information literacy skills and providing sources of accurate information that counter disinformation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.slj.com\/neverendingsearch\/2016\/11\/26\/truth-truthiness-triangulation-and-the-librarian-way-a-news-literacy-toolkit-for-a-post-truth-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Truth, Truthiness, Triangulation: A News Literacy Toolkit for a \u201cPost-Truth\u201d World<br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joyce Valenza compiles a wealth of resources for understanding the issues and helping users assess \u201ccredibility, reliability, and bias\u201d in this article from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">School Library Journal.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Libraries transform\u2026 because we are experts at being aware of trends and issues and willing to share our resources in documents such as the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1zv7DiiyOHRrwTjEbrWbkE0UvJcZ0qDGCu9lhE1AHdhE\/edit?ts=585d9124\">ALSC&#8217;s Post-Election Resource<\/a>. \u00a0April is the perfect time to get involved and here&#8217;s how in the words of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ALA president Julie Todaro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs part of our preparation for <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/conferencesevents\/celebrationweeks\/natlibraryweek\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Library Week<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (April 9-15), I am inviting you to become part of Libraries Transform.
