On and around April 30, libraries, schools, communities, and families around the country will celebrate by connecting children with diverse books and programs. Since 1996, when nationally acclaimed children\u2019s book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and literacy as an expansion of Children\u2019s Day, D\u00eda celebrations have continued to grow.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why D\u00eda?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Children depend on adults to help them understand the world around them. Now, more than ever, it is important to teach children how to learn about the cultures and languages of others. One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways of doing this is through the sharing of books.<\/p>\n<p>Through D\u00eda, libraries work to\u2026<br \/>\n\u2022 Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories, and libraries.<br \/>\n\u2022 Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child\u2019s home language and culture.<br \/>\n\u2022 Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies.<br \/>\n\u2022 Recognize and respect culture, heritage, and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How will you celebrate this year?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Need ideas for your program?
