Maybe you’ve considered submitting a proposal, but doubts have held you back. Need a little encouragement? Here are some of the top myths about teaching an online course or webinar for ALSC:

Myth 1: You have to be an expert.
You don’t have to know everything about a topic (who does?). All you need is some knowledge to share on a topic you care about. It’s perfectly fine to present content from a “best practices” approach: What did you do? How did it work? What did you learn that may benefit others?

Myth 2: You have to be a fantastic public speaker.
Maybe you don’t love standing up in front of a room full of people, but when you present ALSC online education, you can sit in front of a computer and microphone in the comfort of your own home or office. You can even present while wearing your pajamas!

Myth 3: You have to be a tech wizard.
The webinar and course software isn’t terribly complicated. Really! More importantly, ALSC staff will walk you through a technical test-run beforehand to ensure you feel prepared on the day of your presentation.

Myth 4: It takes a lot of time.
For webinars, you’re really only preparing a 45-minute talk and some slides (leaving 15 minutes for questions.) For courses, once you’ve completed your initial setup in Moodle, you only need to change small things here and there for each individual class. To lessen the time-investment burden even further, consider adapting content from a previous presentation you created, and/or teaching a course or webinar with another colleague or colleagues, which brings us to our next two myths …

Myth 5: You have to create all-new content.
Did you prepare an awesome conference presentation? Why not adapt the content to be presented as an online continuing education opportunity? Even if you’ve already presented your work face-to-face, even at an ALSC event, you’re welcome to present the information again and reach a whole new audience who weren’t able to attend in-person.

Myth 6: You have to do it alone.
Nervous about teaching by yourself? Invite a colleague or two to present with you so that you can divide up the work and support one another. Many hands make light work, as the saying goes!

Myth 7: Not many people will benefit.
In fact, an average of 300-400 people sign up for webinars, and even more people participate via archived webinars. Keep in mind that with ALSC’s new online education pricing structure (including more free learning opportunities), even more people will likely participate in ALSC online learning.

Myth 8: You want to toot your own horn.
You love your work! Wanting to talk about it isn’t a matter of bragging, it’s about wanting to share what you know, what you’ve learned, and what you care about with others. Share your joy, share your passion, share yourself!

***************************************************************

This guest post was written by the ALSC Education Committee.
