Why inclusion?<\/strong><\/h1>\n

We can do better in terms of inclusion. \u00a0We must<\/i> do better. \u00a0As youth services librarians\u00a0we do not simply purchase and organize books. \u00a0Nor do we mindlessly offer\u00a0programming. \u00a0We think about what we are doing. \u00a0We fill needs in our community, the people we represent and the people who rely on us. \u00a0Inclusion will fill this need and much more.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0struggle with diversity<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n

As of February 2015, we are still behind in diverse children’s literature:<\/p>\n

Isn’t quality children’s literature enough?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Quality children’s literature builds strength in readers. Getting children to pick up a book and read it speaks to how well the book reflects their lives. \u00a0Creating\u00a0a collection and designing programming that are\u00a0diverse welcomes patrons from a range of cultural backgrounds. \u00a0Above all, our efforts will\u00a0encourage empathy by helping kids better understand their similarities and differences<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The world we live in is only increasing in terms of its diversity and connections. \u00a0Building a better world means preparing children to be global citizens. \u00a0When we aim for inclusion<\/i>, we must put action behind diversity. \u00a0Programming should\u00a0introduce children to diversity. \u00a0Consider exploring\u00a0countries that either they, their families or their neighbor’s families come from. \u00a0Virtual trips to cities, holidays and wildlife, tasting foods, and\u00a0listening to diverse music nurtures future world citizens. \u00a0Children are naturally curious and emotional. \u00a0Feeding them positive experiences helps combat\u00a0the negative news that pours from our screens.<\/p>\n
