Caldecott Medal Winner Ed Young, New York Times Bestselling Author Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and award-winning authors Tor Seidler and Margaret McMullan will headline the Southampton Children\u2019s Literature Conference, July 28-August 1. Part of the internationally renowned Southampton Writer\u2019s Conferences sponsored by Stony Brook Southampton\u2019s acclaimed MFA in Writing and Literature Program, the Children\u2019s Literature Conference offers a unique forum for established and emerging writers, artists, and lovers of children\u2019s literature to study and discuss the craft of writing for young readers.<\/p>\n
The Southampton Writer\u2019s Conference, which Tom Wolfe has called \u2018the best conference in the Country,\u2019 is known for its prestigious faculty and for attracting participants from around the world. The Children\u2019s Literature Conference is \u2018rapidly becoming one of the best places in the country to learn about writing for young people,\u2019 according to Conference Director Emma Walton Hamilton, who is also Executive Director of the MFA Program\u2019s Young American Writers Project (YAWP) and Editorial Director for The Julie Andrews Collection publishing program.<\/p>\n
Attendees are guided through workshops, lectures and group discussions by world-renowned authors, illustrators and editors, while enjoying the summer resort of the Hamptons on the East End of Long Island. Workshops for the 2010 Children\u2019s Literature Conference include:<\/p>\n
Guest presenters Arlene Alda and Lisa DeSimini (\u2018Iris Has a Virus\u2019), and Jim and Kate McMullan (\u2018I Stink!!\u2019), will explore the author\/illustrator collaborative process. Amy Krouse Rosenthal (\u2018Duck\/Rabbit,\u2019 \u2018The Wonder Book\u2019) will discuss her work and screen one of her short films. Novelist\/librarian Catherine Creedon (\u2018Blue Wolf\u2019) will head an elective on research for writers, and Whiting Award-winning poet Julie Sheehan (\u2018Bar Book\u2019), will offer \u2018Meter Making\u2019 for those who write in verse.<\/p>\n
Emma Walton Hamilton, who also works as a freelance children\u2019s book editor and offers online courses in writing for children (www.justwriteforkids.com<\/a>), will lead an elective on marketing in the digital age. Walton Hamilton has co-authored twenty children\u2019s books with her mother, Julie Andrews, five of which have been on the New York Times best-seller list, including the recent anthology, Julie Andrews\u2019 Collection Of Poems, Songs, And Lullabies.
