{"id":14243,"date":"2016-10-19T12:01:20","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T16:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=14243"},"modified":"2016-10-14T09:51:18","modified_gmt":"2016-10-14T13:51:18","slug":"how-will-you-build-a-better-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2016\/10\/how-will-you-build-a-better-world\/","title":{"rendered":"How Will You \u2018Build a Better World\u2019?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cslpreads.org\/\">Collaborative Summer Library Program<\/a> theme for 2017\u2019s summer reading program is \u2018Build a Better World\u2019, and for me as a youth services librarian, \u2018building a better world\u2019 means getting my community to feel they are making a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others.\u00a0 This summer, we have the chance to do something really big and truly wonderful.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"mceu_47\" class=\"wp-link-preview\">Consider the possibilities:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Take the book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terryfarish.com\/category\/luis-paints-the-world-blog\">Luis Paints the World<\/a>. Why not start a public art project created by the children of your neighborhood?<\/li>\n<li>Consider the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780060564810\/on-meadowview-street\">On Meadowview Street<\/a> and how you can use it to introduce the concept <a href=\"http:\/\/lake.ifas.ufl.edu\/discovery-gardens\/backyard-habitat.shtml\">backyard habitat<\/a>s or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/communitygarden.org\/\">community garden<\/a> at your library<\/li>\n<li>Ask your Friends group to help sponsor a <a href=\"https:\/\/littlefreelibrary.org\/\">Little Free Library<\/a> that your kids create during a STEM program.\u00a0 It involves architecture, planning, site planning, sustainability and more!<\/li>\n<li>Have your kids read about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getgeorgiareading.org\/book_donkey\">Biblioburro<\/a>, then decide how they can bring the joy of reading to children or a community, an assisted living facility or a senior event at the library.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how I used this concept once: <a href=\"http:\/\/flagpole.com\/arts-culture\/art-notes\/2015\/05\/27\/athfest-educates-grantee-brings-shadow-puppetry-to-pinewoods\">Biblioburro shadow puppet show<\/a> \u2013 a show built by the children of a Hispanic community, then circulated around the county for summer reading performances.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lakesidepottery.com\/HTML%20Text\/Methods%20of%20Handbuilding.htm\">hand building with clay<\/a>, polymer clays and self-hardening clay through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labanhill.com\/dave_the_potter_53284.htm\">Dave the Potter<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.winetowater.org\/\">Wine to Water<\/a> \u2013 bring in a non-profit that inspires you to speak about their work, or have the children explore or find one that moves them.\u00a0 Then commit to help them engage in a project that supports that non-profit\u2019s work.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/PlayingForChange\">Playing for Change<\/a> \u2013 invite libraries and kids around the world to submit a video for a compilation, all singing or playing the same song \u2013 maybe on ukulele?\u00a0 Maybe on instruments they make from recycled or repurposed materials?\u00a0 See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mq0D5kq9ePE\">Land Philharmonic<\/a> for some amazing ideas!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope you will follow your heart, do something you have never tried before, engage your entire community and make them look back on the summer of 2017 and be proud.<\/p>\n<p>*********************************************************************************<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13804\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gladiatorspen\/27739071663\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/27739071663_3e11fe22c8_q.jpg\" alt=\"Photo courtesy: Elise VanCise\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy: Elise VanCise<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Today\u2019s guest blogger is Jonathan Dolce. Jonathan currently works for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mylakelibrary.org\/newsletter\/article.aspx?IDArticle=918\">Lake County Library System<\/a>, and has been working in Central Florida libraries since 2000.\u00a0 He took two years out to be a mountaintop farmer in Puerto Rico, then returned to Central Florida libraries.
