{"id":1409,"date":"2010-04-07T13:54:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T20:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=1409"},"modified":"2010-04-08T07:05:32","modified_gmt":"2010-04-08T14:05:32","slug":"discover-d-c-the-great-blogdown-to-the-annual-conference-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2010\/04\/discover-d-c-the-great-blogdown-to-the-annual-conference-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Discover D.C. &#8211; The Great Blogdown to the Annual Conference #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ALSC Local Arrangements Committee is ready and waiting to welcome you to our nation&#8217;s capital for this year&#8217;s ALA Annual Conference, June 24-29.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll\u00a0be periodically sharing tidbits of information about D.C. and the conference here on the ALSC Blog during the next 2 1\/2 months as we blogdown to the Annual Conference.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Getting Around D.C. &#8211; The Metro<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The key to getting around Washington is familiarizing yourself with our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmata.com\">Metro<\/a> Transit System.\u00a0 Known to locals as simply the Metro (several of its lines run at or above ground level, so it\u2019s not strictly a subway), the transit system\u2019s rail portion has been in operation since April 1976.\u00a0 If you find yourself traveling on the Red Line through Downtown D.C., you\u2019ll be on the oldest part of the system.\u00a0 With 106.3 miles of tracks and 86 stations in 2 states and the District of Columbia, Metro is the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> largest rail transit system in the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Metro&#8217;s train lines are organized by color (Red, Blue, Orange, Green, and Yellow)<\/li>\n<li>You can find what colors serve each station by looking at the colored stripes on the top of the brown station identification pylon outside the station entrance.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Fares are higher during peak travel times (Weekdays, Opening-9:30am and 3-7pm and Weekends, 2am-Closing)<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t put your farecard near your cell phone &#8211; it&#8217;ll become demagnetized and useless.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most hotels and attractions\u00a0in downtown D.C.
