{"id":14057,"date":"2016-09-17T16:52:26","date_gmt":"2016-09-17T20:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=14057"},"modified":"2025-05-27T15:24:42","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T19:24:42","slug":"stand-right-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2016\/09\/stand-right-read\/","title":{"rendered":"Stand Up for Your Right to Read!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you use the classic display to highlight Banned Books Week?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The nice thing about Banned Books Week (September 25 &#8211; October 1, this year) is that it provides an opportunity for an eye-catching display on a topic of importance that can lead to meaningful conversations with patrons.<\/p>\n<p>This year the theme is of particular interest to youth librarians. It\u2019s \u201cDiversity\u201d \u2013 certainly on our minds and in our conversations and posts. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftrf.org\/\">Freedom to Read Foundation<\/a> reports that nine of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/bbooks\/frequentlychallengedbooks\/top10\">ten most challenged titles in 2015<\/a> were by diverse authors. It won\u2019t surprise you, I suspect, to learn that <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/315643\/i-am-jazz-by-jessica-herthel-illustrated-by-shelagh-mcnicholas\/9780803741072\/\">I Am Jazz<\/a> <\/em>by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/authors\/236459\/jessica-herthel\">Jessica Herthel<\/a> (see below!) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/authors\/236460\/jazz-jennings\">Jazz Jennings<\/a> is on the list.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-14056 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/I-Am-Jazz-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"i-am-jazz\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So perhaps you\u2019ll put together a book display featuring books that have been challenged over the years, and look forward to questions from patrons like, \u201c<em>That<\/em> was challenged? But I love that book! Why was it challenged?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you want to try something new.\u00a0 How about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/bbooks\/bannedbooksweek\/ideasandresources\/display\">display ideas<\/a> from the ALA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/offices\/oif\">Office for Intellectual Freedom<\/a>. Post it on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/bbooks\/bannedbooksweek\/events\">site<\/a> to promote it and let the world know.<\/li>\n<li>Maybe your thing is social media and you\u2019ll retweet the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/VirtualReadOut?src=hash\">#VirtualReadOut<\/a> video of the day, or even make your own. (And you don\u2019t even have to be awake to be part of it!)<\/li>\n<li>Want to be better informed? In 50 minutes you\u2019ll get 50 tips, ideas and resources. Or you can just get the presentation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/sites\/ala.org.advocacy\/files\/content\/FiftyShadesofBannedBooksWeek.pdf\">slides<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On Thursday, September 29 at 10 AM CDT is <a href=\"https:\/\/attendee.gotowebinar.com\/register\/1395092616342838274\">Battling Bannings: Authors discuss intellectual freedom and the freedom to read<\/a>. One of the featured authors is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/authors\/236459\/jessica-herthel\">Jessica Herthel<\/a>.
