Are you passionate about the freedom to read? \u00a0 If any or all of these apply to you, \u00a0make sure to stop by the Virtual Read Out stage, just outside the entrance to the Exhibits Hall. \u00a0The Read-Out is sponsored by ALA&#8217;s Office of Intellectual Freedom and SAGE.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy. \u00a0Really, I promise. \u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><!--more-->Here are the steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select a book.\u00a0There is a good collection of banned\/challenged books from which to select.<\/li>\n<li>Pick out an excerpt to read.<\/li>\n<li>Hop up on a stool<\/li>\n<li>Introduce yourself<\/li>\n<li>Explain why you chose that particular book<\/li>\n<li>Read for a minute or so.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This morning, I came across the stage purely by accident. \u00a0But what a fortuitous accident it turned out to be. I was heading to the Exhibits Hall after a meeting and stopped to see what was being filmed. \u00a0I ended up staying and reading.<\/p>\n<p>l almost went with Alice Walker&#8217;s <em>The Color Purple<\/em> (a book I adore), but then I spotted it:\u00a0\u00a0one of my most beloved childhood books,\u00a0<em>Little House on the Prairie<\/em> by Laura Ingalls Wilder.<\/p>\n<p>Wilder&#8217;s books resonated with me. \u00a0Laura told us all the story of her youth, but I felt she was speaking directly to me. \u00a0She presented a fascinating window into another time &#8212; when buffalo and prairie chickens still roamed; when the primary mode of transportation was horse and wagon and tenacity; and a penny, tin cup and a candy cane were the best presents ever. \u00a0These books kindled in me a passion for history that remains to this day.<\/p>\n<p>This book, and the rest of the series, \u00a0offer a view of American history told from just one perspective &#8212; that of a young girl moving across the prairie with her family.<\/p>\n<p>Join in and let your voice be heard!<\/p>\n<p>The videos will be posted as part of Banned Books Week. \u00a0 Check out last year&#8217;s Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Banned Books Week Virtual Read-Out! from SAGE and ALA\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/haYHn7ouFxc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you missing your weekly storytime fix? \u00a0Perhaps you are a tad dramatic?
