{"id":13395,"date":"2016-06-25T13:25:40","date_gmt":"2016-06-25T17:25:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=13395"},"modified":"2016-06-28T17:06:26","modified_gmt":"2016-06-28T21:06:26","slug":"think-want-volunteer-yalsa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2016\/06\/think-want-volunteer-yalsa\/","title":{"rendered":"So you think you want to volunteer for YALSA&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you think YALSA as opposed to ALA is a softer option for volunteering your professional, think again! \u00a0These people are dedicated. \u00a0Youth services is a calling and so is throwing your hat in the proverbial ring. \u00a0It&#8217;s a ring not of doom, but a multi-ring circus, and your committee chair is the ringmaster.<\/p>\n<p>But wait! \u00a0Don&#8217;t walk away yet! \u00a0There is hope for the more casual contributor. \u00a0And indeed some of the smaller, less time-consuming contributions may in fact lead to bigger and better things.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how it breaks down:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>If you have just <em>5 minutes<\/em> a month to spare<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why not nominate a title for a reading list?<\/li>\n<li>Contribute content to the Wiki!\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s easy, just make sure to get your topic vetted first to make sure it is a good fit<\/li>\n<li>Adapt something you&#8217;ve written before and get it out there!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>If you have <em>30 minutes<\/em> a month to spare<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why not submit a program idea?<\/li>\n<li>Join or view an online webinar\n<ul>\n<li>If you join YALSA you get an all access backstage meet the band and get invited to the after party or online webinars! \u00a0Past topics have included everything from cultural competence to content creation &#8211; chock o&#8217; block full of countless topics!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Apply for a member award<\/li>\n<li>Apply for a grant &#8211; YALSA gives out $150K\/annum in grants. \u00a0It&#8217;s up for grabs!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>If you have <em>60 minutes<\/em> a month to spare<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why not blog for YALSA?<\/li>\n<li>Join the mentoring program (sign up is in May)\n<ul>\n<li>You can do it all online!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Some of the committees are almost 100% virtual &#8211; like the strategic reconnaissance command committee&#8230;well&#8230;it&#8217;s really just the strategic committee, but <em>WOW!<\/em> \u00a0Exciting stuff! \u00a0All from the comfort of your own internet connection!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>If you are ready for a commitment<\/strong><\/span>: (without the marriage and mortgage)<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot you can do for YALSA, but beware all ye who enter here&#8230;<em>here there be part-time jobs!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Board fellow<\/li>\n<li>Research &#8211; there&#8217;s funding available, folks!<\/li>\n<li>Award Committee &#8211; Printz award committee is heavy duty reading and time commitment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>YALSA offers so much more, too, than even this&#8230;thirsty for more?!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Further education<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Webinars on the members only portion of the YALSA site<\/li>\n<li>3rd Thursday every month &#8211; live webinars with, like, live living people<\/li>\n<li>Only got a coffee break to commit? \u00a0Why not watch a 10-minute YALSA Academy video?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>YALSA Interest groups<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Got a great idea for\u00a0an interest group?
