Do you share poems at your story time?\u00a0Have you danced to a poem?\u00a0 Pretended you were a fish writing a poem in the ocean? Or maybe you crunched and munched along with a noisy food poem?While yelling out words and acting out the poem, poetry at story time incorporates the Early Literacy Skills and encourages families to be silly together.\u00a0 Add one or two poems to your story time theme each week.<\/p>\n

Poetry Pocket Song: (Tune: Old MacDonald Had a Farm)<\/strong>
\nHere\u2019s my poetry pocket with something inside.
\nWhat could it be?
\nI\u2019ll open it up and take a look.
\nTell me what you see?
\n(Possible felt items: A Pizza!\u00a0 A Penguin!\u00a0 A Ball! A Fish! A Kite!)<\/p>\n

How it works:\u00a0<\/strong>
\nSing the poetry pocket song, at the end of the song pull out a felt shape, have everyone yell out what it is, (It\u2019s a kite!).\u00a0 Then share the title of the poetry book and author.\u00a0 Have everyone stand up.\u00a0 Are you ready?\u00a0 Explain what the movement or word they will say then read the poem.\u00a0 For example: In the book\u00a0Lullaby & Kisses Sweet: Poems to Love with Your Baby Selected <\/em>by Lee Bennett Hopkins, read the poem,<\/a> \u2018Up in the Air\u2019 by J. Patrick Lewis<\/a>, have everyone act out each object-A leaf, a kite, a ball, a bird, a cloud and a swing. \u00a0\u201cA bird on a the wing,\u201d (flap your arms and fly like a bird).\u00a0 Depending on the poem have everyone repeat the words after you or act out the poem while you\u2019re reading it.
\nRead the poem twice.<\/p>\n

Supplies:<\/strong>\u00a0 Felt board (big or small), Big felt pocket shape-any color, multiple felt objects and children\u2019s poetry books.<\/p>\n

Sheila Grier, Librarian at Deschutes Public Library created a big blue felt poetry pocket for me.\u00a0 The song is originally from Heather McNeil, Public Services Manager-Here\u2019s my bag with something inside. (I switched it to here\u2019s my poetry pocket with something inside.)\u00a0 Thank you Sheila and Heather!<\/p>\n

Some of the children in your audience might be hearing the word poetry for the first time.\u00a0 Invite parents\/guardians and more to explore the poetry section after story time.\u00a0 Create several mini-displays during the month of April highlighting poetry books to read at home for ages 0-5.<\/p>\n
