Are you interested in developing a program for ALA Annual 2017, and wondering what topics are in demand from ALSC members? In January, the Program Coordinating Committee put out a call for ideas<\/a> and asked for your feedback. We offered thirteen topic areas and asked members to rank their favorites.<\/p>\n

Here are all thirteen topic areas we suggested ranked in order of ALSC members’ choices:<\/p>\n

1. Diversity in children’s lit
\n2. Partnerships and outreach
\n3. Age specific programming
\n4. STEM\/STEAM
\n5. Summer learning
\n6. Difficult conversations
\n7. Media mentorship
\n8. Recent immigrant communities
\n9. Collection development
\n10. Diversity in the profession
\n11. Advocacy
\n12. Gender diversity
\n13. Networking<\/p>\n

Need more inspiration? Below you’ll find additional ideas suggested by ALSC members in response to the survey. These are not ranked and appear in the order in which they were received.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Continuing Education after the MLIS
\n\u2022 Working with difficult coworkers\/directors\/city agencies– best practices, stress relief, etc
\n\u2022 Programming for Children with Special Needs
\n\u2022 Localized networking- how to bring back info from ALA, etc, and share with people who can’t afford time\/money for conference
\n\u2022 Poetry, poetry programs, apps, National Poetry Month
\n\u2022 Social services: ie. Food programs at the library to serve hungry families, homelessness, libraries as a safe environment etc
\n\u2022 Child development and how it relates to library services, the mechanics of reading ( to help with readers advisory for emerging readers)
\n\u2022 The impact on tech on families
\n\u2022 Recent youth space upgrades\/renovations. Slide shows etc
\n\u2022 Early Literacy\/Babies Need Words
\n\u2022 Preschool Programming outside of storytime
\n\u2022 Becoming a youth services manager
\n\u2022 Statistics, budgeting
\n\u2022 I would love to see a diversity track that covers diversity in the profession, networking with others that are from a more diverse culture, diversity in children’s lit, gender diversity, also how to encourage diversity in publishing and other areas related to libraries.
\n\u2022 Creating a culture of reading in our community
\n\u2022 Time\/workload management; librarian lifehacks
\n\u2022 Leadership and management chops
\n\u2022 Homeschooling
\n\u2022 Serving low-income kids and families
\n\u2022 Parent involvement
\n\u2022 Advancing early literacy best practices based on research- screens and reality<\/p>\n

The call for proposals for ALA Annual 2017 in Chicago will go out in late March\/early April. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!<\/p>\n
