The ALSC Intellectual Freedom (IF) Committee serves as a liaison to other ALA Divisions and Committees, but also to a partner institution you might not know well. \u00a0At Midwinter 2016, the co-chairs of the ALSC IF committee spent a fascinating day with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftrf.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom to Read Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FTRF) folks and learned a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12381\" style=\"width: 113px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftrf.org\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12381\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ftrflogo.png\" alt=\"Source: Freedom to Read Foundation website\" width=\"113\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source: Freedom to Read Foundation website<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FTRF is an affiliate \u2013 not a part \u2013 of ALA. Its purpose is to protect and defend the First Amendment, particularly supporting \u201cthe right of libraries to collect \u2013 and individuals to access &#8211; information.\u201d \u00a0If you face a challenge in your library, you\u2019ll probably call ALA\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/offices\/oif\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Office for Intellectual Freedom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for advice. \u00a0But you also want to remember our powerful advocates at FTRF, since that is where passionate attorneys speak for our patrons and for us when legal defense is needed. \u00a0They\u2019ll go to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftrf.org\/?page=Litigation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">court<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if necessary. FTRF also works to fend off trouble before it gets to litigation by keeping close tabs on state and federal legislation. \u00a0And they\u2019re on the lookout for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ftrf.org\/?page=Developing_Issues\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developing issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the free speech and privacy horizon, such as the question of labeling book and media content for youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So here are a couple of action items for you to consider: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ftrf.site-ym.com\/general\/register_member_type.asp?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Join the FTRF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for as little as $10 if you\u2019re a student, or $35 if you\u2019re not. \u00a0Get started on your application for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ftrf.site-ym.com\/?page=Conable_Scholarship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conable Conference Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a free trip to an ALA Annual conference if you\u2019re a student or new to the profession. \u00a0(Applications open in February.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/aboutalsc\/coms\/alscforms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">volunteer to serve on an ALSC committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to feed \u2013 or reignite \u2013 your passion. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>-Laura Jenkins, ALSC Intellectual Freedom Committee co-chair<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you say \u201cyes\u201d to an appointment to serve on an ALSC committee, you\u2019re saying \u201cyes\u201d to meeting interesting people, and getting re-energized about topics and issues that are important to our profession and vital to those we serve.
