{"id":11708,"date":"2015-10-28T00:01:38","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T04:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=11708"},"modified":"2025-06-04T14:25:02","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T18:25:02","slug":"gratuitous-information-librarylife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2015\/10\/gratuitous-information-librarylife\/","title":{"rendered":"Gratuitous information (#librarylife)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Humor me by reading this, and I&#8217;ll return the favor.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, I was lamenting the fact that I hadn&#8217;t seen a favorite patron in months &#8211; a chatty, precocious boy who, since a very young age, had been allowed by his mother to come alone to the library and read whatever he wished.\u00a0 He would request every book in a nonfiction series about baseball, basketball, football, or whatever struck his fancy.\u00a0 Never shy about seeking assistance, he once came to me inquiring why we did not have a book about the Seattle Seahawks (we&#8217;re in NJ).\u00a0 I explained that unless the team has superstar players or has won the Super Bowl, there aren&#8217;t always current books available about them.\u00a0 The day after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/superbowl\/48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seahawks won their only Super Bowl<\/a>, he came in to place his hold.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I was thrilled when he popped in on a quiet Thursday night.\u00a0 With his mother&#8217;s usual trust, he was carrying her driver&#8217;s license for identification.\u00a0 He needed to print some items for homework. We had a nice little chat.\u00a0 I told him that I&#8217;d missed him and how nice it was to see him. I asked about school.<\/p>\n<p>When his homework was finished, he came to the reference desk to pay for his prints.\u00a0 The cost was eighty cents.\u00a0 He gave me a dollar and I gave him his change, commenting that I hoped to see him again soon.\u00a0 He distractedly began scanning the surface of the reference desk.\u00a0 &#8220;What do you need?&#8221; I said. &#8220;Tape? Paper clip?
