{"id":10419,"date":"2015-03-15T13:05:30","date_gmt":"2015-03-15T17:05:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=10419"},"modified":"2015-03-13T13:49:32","modified_gmt":"2015-03-13T17:49:32","slug":"advocate-for-your-diverse-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/advocate-for-your-diverse-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocate for Your Diverse Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April 30<sup>th<\/sup> is the annual celebration of the diverse culture and heritage of our community.\u00a0 \u00a0As a library, our mission is not only to advocate for the library, but for our community.\u00a0 What better way to do this, than to celebrate that which makes each culture so special?<\/p>\n<p>The first library I worked at embraced this philosophy. The Hoover Public Library created a program called, \u201cCelebrate, (insert country).\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0By contacting the local university\u2019s multicultural council, local cultural groups, and reaching out to the community, the library spends a week celebrating the diverse population it serves. \u00a0During their programs that week, the library highlights that culture\u2019s literary and local contributions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Book clubs read and discuss books from that culture.<\/li>\n<li>Story times incorporate the cultural theme.<\/li>\n<li>Community programs are created which hire authentic local musicians, and artists. Ethnic cuisine is also served to embrace and welcome everyone to celebrate these cultures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Being a part of this program made me realize that it is the library\u2019s duty to reach out to its community, to advocate for all members, and to emphasize the importance of literacy for all cultural backgrounds.
