Now that this year’s Summer Reading Program is well behind you, have you thought about some segment of your service population or area of town that you wish you could serve but may not have the funds to reach? Perhaps you have a wonderful, creative, innovative idea for a summer reading program, but you just need the necessary dollars to implement it. Well, now is the time to think about applying for the ALSC\/BWI Summer Reading Program Grant.<\/p>\n

This grant of $3000 is awarded annually to an ALSC librarian to underwrite a creative, innovative summer reading program. It is designed to encourage reading programs for children in a public library by providing financial assistance of $3,000, while recognizing ALSC members for outstanding program development. The applicant must plan and present an outline for a theme-based summer reading program in a public library. The Committee encourages proposals with innovative ways to encourage involvement of children with physical or mental disabilities.<\/p>\n

The Santa Clara (Calif.) City Library was the 2007 recipient of the ALSC\/BWI Summer Reading Program Grant. As part of the “Get a Clue @ Your Library” Summer Reading Program, the library made specific efforts to promote the club to children who are part of Santa Clara County’s Vision Impaired Program.<\/p>\n
