{"id":10088,"date":"2015-02-03T12:01:41","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T17:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/?p=10088"},"modified":"2015-01-29T16:35:49","modified_gmt":"2015-01-29T21:35:49","slug":"state-union-er-youth-services-department","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/2015\/02\/state-union-er-youth-services-department\/","title":{"rendered":"The State of the Union, er, Youth Services Department"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you get caught up in the goal-oriented, stats-oriented, what-can-we-accomplish-next part of your job? I certainly do, so this past December, I took the Youth Services staff meeting (ahem, party) to the next level, adding in a look back over all the major accomplishments of the past year.<\/p>\n<p>We always have plenty of fun at our December meetings, included a white-elephant gift auction, pot-luck lunch and a Secret Santa-type gift exchange. In 2013, we did a food theme for the gift exchange, but most of us (except for those lucky few, grr!) are watching their weight, so my colleague came up with the idea of socks for 2014. It was awesome\u2014I got peacock feather socks and socks with books on them!<\/p>\n<p>This year was the first of what I hope will be many \u201clet\u2019s celebrate what we have accomplished\u201d themed meetings.<\/p>\n<p>I created an \u201cAnnual Report\u201d type document replete with pictures and fun quotes, printed it up big and taped the sheets up around the room. It took me about 3 hours from start to finish, and I wondered along the way whether it was worth it. I wouldn\u2019t have been able to tackle it without the Board Reports I do every month (I knew those would come in handy someday). And I wouldn\u2019t be able to do the Board Reports without the Monthly Updates I ask my staff to submit, which miraculously, they do!<\/p>\n<p>When I had everything interesting and noteworthy culled from the Board Reports all together in a document, I saw that everything fell into these categories:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Our Space<br \/>\n\u2022 Community Partners<br \/>\n\u2022 School Partners<br \/>\n\u2022 Our Staff<br \/>\n\u2022 Program Highlights<br \/>\n\u2022 Summer Reading Club Highlights<br \/>\n\u2022 Technology Ups &amp; Downs<br \/>\n\u2022 Summer Reading Highlights<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a sample of one of the pages:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Our-Space.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10089\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Our-Space-763x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Our Space\" width=\"640\" height=\"859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Our-Space-763x1024.jpg 763w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Our-Space-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.alsc.ala.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Our-Space.jpg 926w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Next year, it might be an electronic slide-show or it might take a different format.
