For much too short a time this afternoon, I had an opportunity to sit and listen to the Notable Children’s Books committee talk about some of the fiction titles from their GREAT discussion list which they developed throughout 2014. I so enjoy sitting in on these discussions as the panel of book-loving librarians passionately talk about why they appreciate each title as well as concerns they may have about the same title. In a fast-paced manner, these conversations go far beyond the simple “I liked it!” Instead, many elements are brought forward including: character development pacing plot devices style and appropriateness of illustrations child appeal clarity and style of language used visual clues (particularly important in graphic novels) whether the complexity was appropriate for the intended age of the reader resolution of the plot level of interest for a child audience complexity and execution of the plot and much, much...
