Expanding Reader Response through Multimodal Opportunities

In the real world, how often have you read a chapter, an article, or a blog post and immediately thought the best way to make sense of what you just read is to answer discussion questions or write an essay? Contrast that with the number of times you’ve read something that resonated with you—maybe it thrilled or even haunted you—and then instantly sought someone to share your thoughts with. Or perhaps you sat still after reading, letting yourself fill with feelings first, and then turned those feelings into drawing, music, or even dance.  When a text moves a young reader in a significant way, we see them respond to texts in a variety of ways that are more authentic than answering prewritten discussion questions or answering a writing prompt. ALA Annual 2018

AASL 2018 Best Websites for Teaching and Learning #ALAAC18

What a great session from the AASL!  While many librarians may be aware of the AASL’s annual listing of the best websites for teaching and learning, this session delved into each website giving information about the site, age levels, the standards the site addresses, and even showed short video clips about each site and its application. It was a fun way to learn about new resources, and I plan to experiment with a lot of these and hope to use them in my elementary school library curriculum next year. You Would Be a Great Online Learning Instructor!

The great part about a professional association is that it brings together some of the best minds of one field. We have members doing some pretty incredible things. We also have members who would love to know about those incredible things that their peers are doing. The ALSC Education Committee is adding to ALSC’s online course and webinar offerings. If you are interested in teaching a course or webinar, please fill out an Online Education Proposal. How does it work? We’ll for starters you’ll need an idea or topic that you’d like to work with.
