I’m lucky enough to co-present storytime at my location on Fridays. We’ve been examining our storytime routine and doing some deep thinking on how we are integrating the five early literacy practices of sing, talk, read, write, and play. We determined we needed to find a way to better incorporate PLAY into our storytime. But how would we do this and where to put it? We like to incorporate a variety of inclusive movement activities. Therefore, we decided on a rotation of three activities – parade, follow the leader, and dance. We’ve placed this play time strategically between both books and sandwiched it between some breathwork to bring us back. For logistics, we use a portable bluetooth speaker that is synced to my phone. Celebrating the Season
What do a trailer, a blow-up Santa Claus, and a giant inflatable SpongeBob SquarePants have in common? They all played a festive role in the Hope Mills Branch Library’s float we created for our city’s annual Christmas parade. Though the parade has been a beloved tradition for the town of Hope Mills, it is our library’s first experience with this holiday celebration. This incredible outreach opportunity has offered a wonderful way for our team to actively share our programs and services with those in our community. It took both leadership and teamwork on our staffers’ parts to make this event a festive occasion! A staff member generously led our decorating efforts and her family’s personal trailer to support our festive float. Staffers’ creative skills came in handy by utilizing ordinary supplies; youth services staff made a giant snowman from boxes and construction paper, and staff members donated items, including two…
