Happy 100th Birthday, Newbery Medal
Everyone loves a party! Especially librarians at #ALAAC2022! This year, the #Newbery100 Medal celebrated its 100th year, so #ALSC threw a birthday bash. The festivities included cupcakes, decorations, and party games.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has been celebrating 100 years of the (John) Newbery Award this past year via online webinars and an online symposium. Those of us headed to Washington, D.C. for ALA’s Annual Conference can now look forward to in-person celebrations at the Newbery Caldecott Legacy Banquet and at the Newbery 100! Celebration, which will be held at the Marriott Marquis (Independence Salons E F G H) on Saturday, June 25, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

As the calendar turns to 2022 and we eagerly await the 2022 Newbery Selection Committee’s announcement on January 24th, we are officially in the home stretch of the Newbery 100th Anniversary Celebration. Moderator Edith Campbell of this past week’s ALSC webinar, “Problematic Award-Winning Texts: Daniel Boone, the Newbery Award, and Children’s Librarianship,” concluded a terrific program by noting that there is no go-to list of problematic texts. It is the responsibility of all to “formulate our understanding,…to educate ourselves.”

2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the Newbery Medal, and an author’s life will be changed. In celebration of this impending celebration, ALSC once again offered their continuing education course on the Newbery Medal with KT Horning. Over 20 librarians, library professionals, scholars, and library science students participated in the 6-week course from early July through mid-August for a chance to explore the Newbery medal from 1922 til now. And wow, has this medal been on a journey. 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the Newbery Medal, and an author’s life will be changed.
