Since June is Audiobook Appreciation Month, what better way to celebrate both audiobooks and summer than with titles great for family sharing? Added bonus – depending on your library, it might count towards Summer Reading for everyone! I’ve been hooked on audiobooks ever since a grad school assignment required me to listen to one. I had tried listening to books a few times, but just couldn’t get into the format. One book changed it all: Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, narrated by Lynn Redgrave. I was drawn into the story in ways that I never imagined possible. It was pure magic. And it was a perfect way to pass the time over my weekly 6-7-hour (roundtrip) commute. #alaac19 Odyssey Award Ceremony
Audiobooks are near and dear to my heart, and even though there have been times when I had to leave on Monday, I always try to stay until Tuesday. And that is because I simply cannot miss the Odyssey Award Ceremony! This year’s ceremony was wonderful, brimming over with excitement and awe. We were treated to readings by some of the most talented narrators in the business—Rebecca Soler, Dan Bittman, Gabra Zackman, Brian Amador, Cherise Booth, and Elizabeth Acevedo (who narrated her own book!). The books that were honored today range from darling picture books to gritty teen fiction, written by authors Courtney Summers, Carson Ellis, Susan Wood, and Varian Johnson. There is something really powerful about experiencing a live reading. You watch as a shade comes down, and the narrator takes on a new persona—a troubled teen, a curious tween, a magical storyteller. It’s Time to Submit Your Suggestions for Notable Children’s Recordings
Are you an enthusiastic audiobook or children’s music listener? Have you heard anything that might represent the best in children’s recordings? ALSC personal members are encouraged to submit titles for consideration to the Notable Children’s Recordings committee. Any recordings published Nov 1, 2017- Oct 31, 2018 and currently available through a US distributor is under consideration. Please note that publishers, authors, illustrators, artists or editors may not nominate their own titles. Please send your suggestions to Michelle Ng at michelle.ng.alsc@gmail.com. The Notable Children’s Recordings list includes recordings for children 14 years of age and younger of especially commendable quality that demonstrates respect for young people’s intelligence and imagination; exhibit venturesome creativity; and reflect and encourage the interests of children and young adolescents in exemplary ways.
