I’m a messy librarian, and as you might suspect, I love to make a mess in my programs. Today’s second session, “Oh, Baby! Unconventional Programming for Your Youngest Patrons,” validated my love of mess and provided lots of easy, accessible, MESSY program ideas. Imagine a publicly funded library, where barriers such as fines and fees disappear. Not just during a particular time, but each and every day. How many families may frequent the library without this barrier to service? Imagine, how many children may experience checking out their first library book. How many families may increase their frequency of reading when they do not need to worry about returning materials on time? Is this a reality in your library?

ALSC announced that award-winning author David Shannon will present the Opening General Session at the ALSC National Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina. This event will take place at the Charlotte Marriott City Center on Thursday, September 15, 2016 and is sponsored by Scholastic, Inc.
