USSBY Books at #alamw18

In all my years of ALA Conferences- I had never attended a USSBY Presentation- if you don’t know (I didn’t!) that acronym stands for United States Board on Books for Young People. I really liked this presentation because while so much of award selections are top secret, this was an opportunity for the committee to share their selections with the audience. The six presenters had copies of the books they were discussing and actually showed the audience the pages that delighted, inspired, or tickled their fancies! I also loved that they framed their book discussions around motifs that the books invoked for them! Themes like journies, surprise, loss of voice, and Motley Crews! In less than two weeks, the ALA 2018 Youth Media Awards will be announced at #alamw18. Hundreds and hundreds of librarians will be at the press conference which will take place on Monday, Feb. 12, at 8 a.m. MT at the Colorado Convention Center. They will be eagerly anticipating the announcement of the 2018 Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Printz, Pura Belpré, Sibert, Geisel, Schneider Family, and more.

What is taking the top honors in YOUR Mock YMA elections? If you do, you might be as much as a children’s lit geek as I am! It is, of course, the day the ALA Youth Media Awards will be announced from the ALA Midwinter Conference in Denver.
