On Sunday, January 22, John Lewis, Civil Rights hero and representative of Georgia’s 5th congressional district, spoke at the YALSA Morris & Nonfiction Award Program & Presentation in recognition of March: Book 3 winning the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults. He spoke passionately about the role that librarians and libraries have played in his life — his late wife was a librarian — and the importance of good trouble and being brave.

On the Merits of “Nerding Out” at #ALAMW17
We all know the feeling – you’re walking along, minding your own business, when, like a bolt from the blue, you spot a Something.
Sitting In on Notable Children’s Books at #ALAMW17

One informative and relaxing way to spend an afternoon at Midwinter is to sit in on the ALSC Notable Children’s Books Committee. I’m writing this from inside the room with the discussion ongoing, and thought I’d share some reflections.
Strolling the #ALAMW17 Exhibit Hall
Here’s a quick and shaky (sorry!!) time lapse of strolling through some of the children’s publishers in the exhibit hall. You can see a glimpse of Nathan Hale signing galleys of his new graphic novel, One Trick Pony, about 10 seconds in!
Fighting Intergenerational Illiteracy at #ALAMW17
For the second morning session of #ALSCMI, I attended “Fighting Intergenerational Illiteracy with Family Reading Engagement & Community Support without a Grant,” presented by Jonathan Dolce of Florida’s Lake County Library System. Jonathan’s presentation revolved around the outreach project he had coordinated to bring families at risk for low literacy into the library and show them what the library and literature have to offer them by way of a book club — and I have to say, this book club sounds like a lot of fun.
Highlights from Breakfast for Bill at #ALSCMI
My #ALAMW17 adventure began at the ALSC Mini Institute’s Breakfast for Bill! Alongside a tasty continental spread, we were treated to a delightful lineup of two creative couples on the Breakfast with Bill panel, held in honor of William C. Morris of HarperCollins, longtime champion of children’s literature and librarianship. Viki Ash of San Antonio Public Library moderated the panel, which featured picture book power couples Laura Droznek and Kevin Henkes, and Erin and Phillip Stead. If you’re a lover of picture books with even the tiniest drop of romance in your heart, this panel presented some serious #RelationshipGoals.
