#alsc26 Attendee Highlight: Q&A with Steve

In my continuing series on tips from random ALSC National Institute attendees, our third interview is with Pokémon Club representative, Steve. This is his first ALSC Institute. Here’s his take on 10 rapid fire questions.

  1. First Name: Steve
  2. Pronouns: He/Him
  3. Professional Role: Librarian Assistant II
  4. Location: Yolo County Library in Davis, California.
  5. Newbie or returning attendee: This is my first ALSC that I’ve attended. I’ve been to ALA this year to promote Pokémon.
  6. How did you pick the outfit you’re wearing today: My outfit today is a uniform. I’m representing the Pokémon Club and that’s how I chose my outfit.
  7. Tips and tricks as a conference attendee: I definitely recommend making the rounds [exhibits and sponsors] more than one time. You’re going to miss something. There’s always something to see and something to do. Sometimes people are putting on different activities at different times of the day. On our first day here, we were not demo-ing any of the activities. We invited people instead to come back the following days to participate.
  8. Takeaway from today: There’s a lot of joy in play. A lot of people I met this weekend aren’t necessarily comfortable with playing in Pokémon Club. And I hope by the end of the weekend, librarians are really comfortable and confident. It takes a little bit of time to learn, but once you do, it’s pretty easy to run through.
  9. Favorite book recently read: I listen to mostly audiobooks, and I listened to The Poppy War series by R.F. Kuang. And I really enjoyed that series.
  10. Favorite snack to read with books: My favorite snacks in general are peanut butter and jelly oat bites that are great travel snacks. You just toss them in a bag, and honestly, sometimes they replace a meal.

Learning about Pokémon Club from Steve, Librarian Assistant II and Pokémon Club Representative

My goal in this series of “Attendee Highlights” is to interview random ALSC Institute attendees and get their take on conference tips and tricks, including their takeaway from the day. But also, I’m hoping to share other little tid-bits of random answers pertaining to librarianship. My hope is to highlight members who are attending the conference and get their feedback. You can read the first interview here. and the second interview here.

Today’s Conference Blogger is Jen Woo (she/her/hers). Jen is the Family Engagement Coordinator at San Francisco Public Library (the unceded Ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples). With ten years of youth services librarianship, she is most looking forward to the Bill Morris Seminar, meeting folks, sharing ideas and later – making ideas happen at the Library. As a child, she wanted to be a veterinarian and a fire fighter. Alas, she is neither but does own a cat named Bird and is an avid birdwatcher. You can find her drinking coffee, tea and trying to stay warm and cozy at the Institute.
