In my continuing series on tips from random ALSC National Institute attendees, our second interview is with colorful librarian, Kristina. This is her first ALSC Institute. Here’s her take on 10 rapid fire questions.
- First Name: Kristina
- Pronouns: She/Her
- Professional Role: Head of Children’s Services
- Location: Richfield Library in Connecticut
- Newbie or returning attendee: This is my first time at an ALSC Institute but not my first time at an ALA Conference.
- How did you pick the outfit you’re wearing today: This is my favorite outfit, so I wore this one today. My shoes glow in the dark. Purple is my favorite color, and I was told by my library staff that I must wear my rainbow sweater. That’s what I was told. I love walking around and seeing all the different children’s librarians’ outfits. It’s fun. At the train station, I was looking at people’s clothing choices and asking, “Are you a librarian?”
- Tips and tricks as a conference attendee:
- Check your schedule
- Find a friend. Or make a friend.
- Go to anything you think is remotely interesting because you’re going to learn what you didn’t expect to learn.
- Takeaway from today: The session I attended on information literacy and how to incorporate that into everyday children’s librarianship and programming was wonderful. I have a host of ideas on how to add some passive scavenger hunts that include information literacy skills without them realizing it.
- Favorite book recently read: I’m obsessed with Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. I’ve been re-listening to it repeatedly right now for the past year. It’s litRPG (Literary Role-Playing Game) about aliens attacking the planet. And a man and his prize-winning cat enter an 18-level dungeon while the rest of the universe watches it as a reality TV show.
- Favorite snack to read with books: I love M&Ms with pretzels as my choice of snacks.
My goal in this series of “Attendee Highlights” is to interview random ALSC Institute attendees and get their take on conference tips and tricks, including their takeaway from the day. But also, I’m hoping to share other little tad-bits of random questions. My hope is to highlight random members who are attending the conference and get their feedback. You can read the first interview here.

Today’s Conference Blogger is Jen Woo (she/her/hers). Jen is the Family Engagement Coordinator at San Francisco Public Library (the unceded Ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples). With ten years of youth services librarianship, she is most looking forward to the Bill Morris Seminar, meeting folks, sharing ideas and later – making ideas happen at the Library. As a child, she wanted to be a veterinarian and a fire fighter. Alas, she is neither but does own a cat named Bird and is an avid birdwatcher. You can find her drinking coffee, tea and trying to stay warm and cozy at the Institute.
