Libraries today are more than just places to borrow books—they’re safe, welcoming spaces
where families can connect, relax, and feel supported. One simple but meaningful way libraries are making that happen is through calming corners and wellness rooms.
These quiet, cozy spots are designed with caregivers and young children in mind—
especially infants, toddlers, and preschoolers of all abilities. It’s a calm, welcoming space
for feeding infants, soothing big emotions during transitions, or simply taking a breath
before returning to the bustle of play and exploration.
We’ve learned that supporting the emotional well-being of families often comes down to
intentionality and mindfulness in everyday interactions. By creating environments that are
developmentally appropriate and emotionally supportive, libraries can be places where
both children and caregivers feel seen, safe, and connected.
A Wellness Room
That’s why we recently repurposed a study room into a Wellness Room, designed to meet
the needs of caregivers and young children who might need a moment to reset. Inside the
room, you’ll find thoughtful touches that help children and caregivers co-regulate. A popup tent offers a cozy, private nook for little ones to crawl into, while a sound machine that
projects stars can be turned on when extra calm is needed. There’s a weighted blanket,
fidget toys, plush friends, and picture books — tools that help little bodies process big
feelings.
For caregivers, we decorated the walls with framed grounding and breathing techniques in
neutral tones that can be used with children or on their own. These simple prompts remind
us that calm can be practiced, modeled, and shared. Dimmable lighting and a comfortable
chair and footstool for caregivers feeding their little ones are also available.
Our Wellness Room has quickly become more than just a space — it’s a message to
families that their needs are seen and supported. Creating spaces like this doesn’t have to
be complicated or costly — it starts with awareness and understanding that play, learning,
and regulation go hand in hand. Our Wellness Room is one small but meaningful way we’re
helping families feel safe, supported, and at home in the library.
