ALA Annual Conference 2023

ALA Annual 2023 Program Preview #alaac23

Today I’m thrilled to share two programs selected by the ALSC Programming Committee for the 2023 ALA Annual Conference! I can’t wait to attend both of these sessions and I hope you will join me!

Jazzing up Youth Creativity: Free Arts Programs for Libraries

Opening with a live performance from a jazz ensemble, this toe-tapping workshop shares interactive lessons that engage youth in the arts while simultaneously teaching them about history, dance, science, and more. Throughout the presentation, Jazz at Lincoln Center Educators, backed by a band of incredible Jazz musicians, will demonstrate the extraordinary and fun learning opportunities available, for free, through the Mizzen by Mott app.

Presented by:

  • Seton Hawkins, Director of Public Programs – Jazz at Lincoln Center
  • Jennifer Conner, Chief of Strategy and Innovations – CNG Learning
  • Kristin Stayer, Vice President of Engagement and Educator Experiences – Mizzen by Mott

Live music and an introduction to tons of free music-related activities? Don’t miss this session on Saturday, June 24th from 1-2pm in McCormick Place room W187a.

StoryTeen: Encouraging Teen Interns & Volunteers to Offer Storytime, Support Early Literacy, and Explore Careers in Early Education and Librarianship

Looking for new ways to engage teens and enhance your offerings for young library visitors? Discover StoryTeen, Brooklyn Public Library’s unique teen internship program, where high school students explore early literacy practices, the art of creating storytime, and careers in early childhood education and librarianship. Through support from children’s and young adult librarians, StoryTeens constructed their own storytimes, both virtual and in-person, increasing BPL’s multilingual storytime offerings and the diversity of program presenters. StoryTeens attended required and optional training sessions, from “Storytime 101” to a career panel on the variety of careers available in early childhood education and advocacy to a session with local authors on writing and illustrating children’s books.

Presented by:

  • Rachel G. Payne, Coordinator of Early Childhood Services – Brooklyn Public Library
  • Karen Keys, Coordinator of Young Adult Services – Brooklyn Public Library
  • Jessica Ralli, Coordinator of Early Literacy Programs – Brooklyn Public Library

This session promises to be chock full of practical ideas that will enhance your youth and teen services alike! The presenters are working hard to make this session relevant to anyone who attends. Whether librarians are from large, urban library systems or small stand-alone libraries, they hope the lessons and best practices learned along the way will inspire folks to develop their own StoryTeen programs. Mark your calendar for this session on Sunday, June 25 from 11am-12pm in McCormick Place room W184d.
