What’s on your calendar for the morning of Monday, January 30, 2023? If you don’t yet have it on your schedule, make sure to pencil in 8:00 a.m. Central Time that morning for one of the most exciting events of the year for children’s literature. That’s right–the 2023 Youth Media Awards Press Conference is coming!
Each year, the winners of many of the oldest and most prestigious awards for literature for youth are announced at the event. The 2023 press conference will mark the first in-person announcement since January 2020–for attendees at the 2023 LibLearnX conference in New Orleans, you’ll be able to be in the room where the announcement happens and bask in the happy energy and celebration first hand! And if you can’t be there in person, fret not–the event is live-streamed globally.
What awards will you hear announced during the Youth Media Awards Press Conference? This year, the press conference will include the announcement of the winners and honorees of the following awards for young readers (listed here in alphabetical order by award name):
- Alex Awards
- Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature
- Coretta Scott King Awards

As we await the excitement of these announcements, don’t forget that you can share the results of your mock awards discussions at your library or school. Mock discussions are a great way to build awareness of these magnificent awards while sharing phenomenal books with young readers–give a mock discussion a try if you haven’t done one before!
I look forward to seeing lots of librarians in New Orleans for LibLearnX, and most especially at this year’s Youth Media Awards Press Conference. It may be bright and early on a Monday, but it’s an event you won’t want to miss!

Do you an approximate time of when the Newbery Award will be announced? We would like to watch it with our Newbery Club. Thanks
The awards announced by ALSC typically come in the second half of the hour, with the Newbery typically towards the very end. No precise timings, unfortunately, but likely in the final 20 minutes of the slated time!
The Youth Media Awards start at 8am CT and will run for approximately an hour. The Newbery and Caldecott Awards are always announced last, so I would aim for the end of that hour. Thanks!
