Revisiting Readalouds: School Year Style

As a new school year begins, I’ve seen a number of social media posts circulating about looking at modern day titles to read for the first day of school replacing the “time treasured classics.” I’ve been thinking about different occasions that need readalouds and wanted to have some suggestions at the ready.

First Day of School: The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson

Friendship: Words to Make a Friend: A Story in Japanese and English by Donna Jo Napoli

Mystery Reader Suggestion: I Can Make a Train Noise by Michael Emberley, ill. Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick

Names: Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal

Being Kind: Every Little Kindness by Marta Bartolj

What are some other themes that educators often need read-a-louds for? Or other titles you would recommend for the above categories? Please let me know in the comments.

This post addresses ALSC Competency 1.1 Commitment to Client Group- Demonstrates respect for diversity and inclusion of cultural values, and continually develops cultural awareness and works to address implicit bias in order to provide inclusive and equitable service to diverse populations.
