A Celebration of Illustration!

A Celebration of Illustration Graphic

ALSC’s spring conference is approaching! A Celebration of Illustration is everything about…illustration! This virtual one-day event has it all: panel discussions on current issues and trends in illustration with award-winning creatorsillustration-based continuing education programs to help further your work with children and families in libraries, and more.

Education Programs

Below are just two programs that will be hosted at this conference, but you’ll be able to check out a full list on our website. The best part is: all education programs will be available to registered attendees for 45 days after the event!

Celebrating Culture Everyday: Happy 25th DIA!

Celebrate DIA’s 25th Anniversary by exploring the historical trajectory of this national initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds and languages. Join presenters Lucía M. González and Irania Patterson in a candid conversation about creating outstanding culturally-appropriate library programs for children and families, and award-winning author/illustrator Lulu Delacre will share insights about the importance of illustration in affirming and transmitting culture.

By the way, have you checked out our Día website to add your upcoming programming and events to our registry?

It’s a Graphic World: Using Graphic Novels as Informational Texts

Since early civilization, humans have relied on pictures to tell stories. This is especially true today as visual literacy has become a necessary skill. Many learners are visual learners, and research has shown that the multimodality of graphic novels allows readers to better retain information. Comics and graphic novels are being used as informational tools in all areas of life: to explain medical procedures and illnesses, to read and interpret political and social events, and to teach history, science – even cookin! Welcome to our graphic world as we explore diverse graphic novels and best practices for teaching them inside and outside the classroom.

Speakers: Soline Holmes, Academy of the Sacred Heart; Alicia Schwarzenbach, Delgado Community College

General Sessions

At the time of publishing this post, our General Sessions information has not been made public yet, but I pinky promise you will not want to miss them! Both of these sessions will bring together some 2021 award winning creators!

This Celebration is our 2021 replacement for the biennial ALSC Preconference that traditionally precedes ALA’s Annual Conference. Registration is limited with a deadline of April 30 and ALSC members receive a discounted rate. I hope you’ll join us.
