If you’re headed to Seattle, pack your raincoat, wool hat and tennis shoes to trek up and down the many hills of the Emerald City. Before you head out the door, take a look at the Meeting Scheduler Planner and the ALSC conference programs planned. Personally, I love going through the schedule and “favorite-ing” events-it helps me feel better prepared and makes the conference easier. Below are a few events planned for members and non-members, where you can learn more about the organization and how to get involved.
Friday, January 25
ALSC Membership Dinner
Members (and non-members) of ALSC, both new and veteran members are invited to the no-host ALSC Membership Dinner. A member of the ALSC Membership Committee will handle dinner reservations. Dinners will be small groups of 4-6 people at a variety of locations and cuisines. A map of locations can be found here.
The event is designed for new members to learn the ropes of how to get the most out of their conference experiences and for members to have a casual networking opportunity. It’s also a relaxed way to invite non-members to find out about ALSC.
Space is limited; reservations must be made by January 18. The event is nearing capacity, but there are still a few spots left, particularly is you are flexible about where you dine.
6:30pm Various Locations
Saturday, January 26
ALSC Leadership Meeting
Educator and diversity advocate Debbie LeeKeenan will discuss “Anti-bias Education and Children’s Literature: Provoking Courageous Conversations.” Her talk will explore how librarians can foster anti-bias environments and spark discussions with children about equity, diversity, inclusion, race relations, etc. Any conference attendee can attend this meeting that focuses on important issues and supporting leadership within ALSC. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet with ALSC priority group consultants, committee chairs, and the board of directors.
8:30-11:30am Hyatt Regency Seattle, Columbia C
Sunday, January 27
ALSC All Committee Meeting
If you want to learn more about ALSC or see committee work “in action” stop by the All Committee Meeting. The All Committee Meeting is a great way to observe what the committees talk about and plan and to learn a little bit more about some of the mechanics of ALSC. Stop by the Membership Table to say “hi”.
8:30-10:30am at the Hyatt Regency Seattle, Columbia C (Lower Ballroom East A).
Monday, January 28
ALSC/YALSA Joint Member Reception
The joint member social is a spectacular way to wind down the conference, meet other members, and network. Interested in stepping up your game and volunteering for a committee? This is another terrific opportunity to talk to people involved throughout the organization.
5:30-7:30pm Sheraton Seattle, Ravenna
There are LOTS of other wonderful events including Friday night’s USBBY Program with author Aida Salazar, Notable Books & Recording discussions and much more! Check it all out in Event Scheduler or on the Conference website.
See you in Seattle!
