ALSC is a large organization with thousands of members, dozens of committees, and an abundance of projects, programs, and initiatives. Whether you have been a member for years or you are new to the organization, figuring out how to find your own place within ALSC can feel overwhelming.
To address this need, the ALSC Education Committee has developed a webinar, Get Involved with ALSC: Navigating Opportunities within the Organization, scheduled for Wednesday, November 8th. The webinar is intended to 1) help members who want to become involved in ALSC but aren’t sure where to start and 2) inform those who want to learn about additional opportunities within ALSC.
To maximize the webinar’s relevance to ALSC members, the Education Committee developed the content based on feedback and suggestions provided in a recent survey. Topics include:
- Communication venues such as the ALSC-L electronic discussion list, social media, community forums, and conference sessions such as ALSC 101
- In-person and virtual committees and task forces and tips for becoming appointed
- Local and regional opportunities such as ALSC Roadshow
- Teaching and writing opportunities such as the mentorship program, webinars, online courses, newsletter, blog, and Children and Libraries
The webinar will be presented by Dr. Jamie Campbell Naidoo, ALSC President-Elect. Attendees will be able to interact with Dr. Naidoo and ask questions following the presentation. If you have never attended a webinar before, no worries – an internet connection and a computer are all you need. Webcams and microphones are not needed to participate in a live webinar. You can ask questions simply by typing them in a chat box in Adobe Connect, ALSC’s webinar platform.
As you’re reading this, you may be tempted to fill out the ALSC volunteer form right away! However, the current cycle of volunteer forms ends later this month. ALSC members who want to volunteer are advised to submit the form after the webinar. In the meantime, you can bookmark the form at http://www.ala.org/alsc/aboutalsc/coms/alscforms.
Get Involved with ALSC: Navigating Opportunities within the Organization is free to all. You may register at http://www.ala.org/alsc/get-involved-alsc-navigating-opportunities-within-organization. Speaking from my own experience, participating in ALSC has given me valuable opportunities to hone my leadership skills, serve the profession, and meet like-minded colleagues. I hope that you can find your place within ALSC, too! Joining us for the webinar on November 8th is an excellent place to start.
