You Belong Here: Membership with ALSC

Why join ALSC? Why spend money, sometimes from your own pocket, to join another professional organization?

Personally, I have asked many people this exact question while working on the membership committee of ALSC.  The most surprising part of this answer is that there isn’t just one answer. Every single person had a different reason ALSC is so important to his or her career and professional development. What I learned is that no matter what type of library you work at from public, school, to academic, or whether you are a librarian in this profession for thirty years or in SLIS getting ready to apply for your first job, ALSC has resources to help you.

We, at ALSC, want you to know you belong here. No other organization out there will advocate as ALSC does for its members and initiatives, highlight resources on so many diverse topics, and provide a network of people willing to mentor its members to make a difference in their library.

This week, ALSC and its members are excited to promote our new video, You Belong Here: Membership with ALSC. This video, funded by the Friends of ALSC and CLSE, was made to bring awareness to SLIS students and youth service librarians unaware of what it means to be a member of ALSC, an organization that really cares for its members and goes out of its way to mentor librarians new to the profession.

If you feel that ALSC has helped you as a librarian, please watch the video below and help us promote it this week, as we try to bring awareness to librarians and students that may not know everything they are missing without ALSC. Every tweet, blog and social media post will help!
