What You Need to Know About ALSC Scholarships

Did you know that ALSC has scholarships for MLS/MLIS students who plan to work in children’s librarianship?! This is a fantastic opportunity for those considering library school but worried about the cost (and aren’t we all?). Applications are now open, so read on and apply today.

The Frederic G. Melcher Scholarship is awarded to those who intend to pursue an MLS degree and plan to work in children’s librarianship. Two $6,000 scholarships are awarded each year in honor of Frederic G. Melcher, a great leader in promoting better books for children.

The Bound to Stay Bound Books Scholarship is awarded to those pursuing education with the plan to work in library service to children. Four $7,000 awards are given annually. This scholarship is made possible by ALSC through contributions from Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc.

Yes, you read that right; ALSC awards $40,000 to six recipients every year. Maybe you will be one of them! Applications are due March 1, 2017. The application process involves a Personal Statement, three references, and acceptance at an ALA-accredited library school. Go here ( for the full list of requirements and to apply. Good luck!

Quick question: what about MLS students who already work as a children’s librarian? Can they apply for these scholarships, too? Thanks!
