Happy Halloween! This weekend, Lindenhurst Memorial Library held its first Masquerade Ball. Children dressed up in costume, and came to the library during a three hour window of time to play games, create art, and pose for pictures.

FLP Book Bike
Over the past year, my role with the Free Library has changed a bit. I had a baby and moved from West Philadelphia to a different branch in South Philly to be closer to home and my son. I started working with a younger demographic and started thinking more comprehensively about library outreach. One of the benefits of moving to a different branch is serving fresh new set of patrons in a different environment and responding/adapting to the challenges that come with a new place. While working in West Philly, I always kicked the around the idea of a mobile library in my head, not in a bookmobile form, but something more low tech, with a minimal footprint that could be easily sustainable. One of my mentors at the Free Library described how he used to roll a book cart up and down Ridge Avenue to get those books into…

Backlist Booklist: Fantasy Edition
Fall seems like a great time to tackle a good fantasy, doesn’t it? And since we focus so much on new books, let’s give the backlist on our shelves some love. Your tweens will love these great fantasies, and you’ll want to read them yourself! Christina Diaz Gonzalez’s Moving Target is a thrill ride from start to finish. It tells the story of Cassie, an American student in Rome, who thinks her family is totally normal and that her dad is just a regular old art history professor–until someone tries to kill him. That’s when Cassie finds out she’s from an ancient bloodline that allows her to use an artifact that can alter the future. And now she has to run from a secret society that wants it very badly. And if you loved it? Never fear, the second book just came out last month. …

A Passion for Weeding
While some of my colleagues enjoy it about as much as root canal, I love weeding. I’m in the stacks at least once a week looking for likely candidates. Just as a garden needs to be cleared of the excess plant material and weeds choking out the blooms; so to a library needs to be cleared of old, worn, and disused materials.
National Summer Learning Association Conference: Dare to Disrupt!
It’s been a jam-packed ride so far at the National Conference on Afterschool and Summer Learning, taking place right now from October 24-26, 2016 in Seattle, Washington. A joint venture of the National Summer Learning Association and School’s Out Washington, it’s the stuff that FOMO dreams are made of with just 1.5 days and over 60 workshops about summer learning — and that doesn’t even include the general sessions and exhibits! This sold-out event brings together 1,000 teachers, afterschool providers, policymakers, consultants, vendors, and of course, librarians.
