This afternoon at #alaac16, Amy Steinbauer rocked in her program: Storytime Live! Improv Techniques That Work! She possess a great sense of humor and knowledge on how to move beyond your comfort zone to try new ways to engage your story time audience. Amy’s enthusiasm was contagious. She kept the audience of over 65 in stitches. Her approach is just another wonderful tool for your story time tool kit.
Some of the highlights I took away included:
- Have fun.
- What do you want to bring to storytime? Being grumpy or silly?
- Don’t get hung up on having to follow a script.
- Engage with parents
- Realize that storytime is only 20 minutes. Make the most of it!
- Use a puppet.
Amy showcased a few interactive games. Zip! Zap! Zop! Categories and Crazy 8’s.
Mostly, what I took away from her program, beside tons of ideas on invigorating co-workers, was to not be afraid to try new things. Be flexible! Remember to look for the joy in story time.
Thanks, Amy!
