For much too short a time this afternoon, I had an opportunity to sit and listen to the Notable Children’s Books committee talk about some of the fiction titles from their GREAT discussion list which they developed throughout 2014. I so enjoy sitting in on these discussions as the panel of book-loving librarians passionately talk about why they appreciate each title as well as concerns they may have about the same title. In a fast-paced manner, these conversations go far beyond the simple “I liked it!” Instead, many elements are brought forward including:
- character development
- pacing
- plot devices
- style and appropriateness of illustrations
- child appeal
- clarity and style of language used
- visual clues (particularly important in graphic novels)
- whether the complexity was appropriate for the intended age of the reader
- resolution of the plot
- level of interest for a child audience
- complexity and execution of the plot
- and much, much more
